Pyrite has fooled many gold prospectors of olden days due to it's appearance, so chances are it was also sold at gold prices to unsuspecting traders. Now days of course it's very easy to test to distinguish and so it's really not going to happen in the modern age. Gold is valued at around 30x the price per gram of pyrite.
