By applying rooting powder, you increase the chances of your cuttings successfully taking root as the resulting roots are stronger and develop more quickly than when no rooting hormones are used.
So the main purpose is to stimulate root growth in plant cuttings. Rooting powders contain hormones, nutrients, and other beneficial substances which work together to create an environment conducive to root formation. Synthetic auxins, such as indole-3-butyric acid (IBA), are commonly used in rooting powders. These auxins mimic the natural growth conditions in plants and promote root development. Some rooting powders may also include cytokinins (another plant growth hormone) and fungicides to reduce the risk of fungal infections.
It can come in three forms - powder, gel or liquid. Powders and gels are preferable because it’s easier to control the amount applied.
