Overgrown roots are definitely a sign that your plant needs a bigger pot and most likely also a fresh soil mix. Cutting the roots is not recommended as it can damage the plant and make it more susceptible to diseases and pests. But you can trim any obviously dead, damaged, or rotten roots with a clean and sharp pair of scissors or pruners.
Choose a new pot that is one or two sizes larger than the current one and make sure it has drainage holes at the bottom.
Fill the new pot with the potting mix that is recommended in the app for your plant type. Carefully remove the plant from the old pot by gently loosening the soil around the roots and lifting it out.
Pop the plant in the center of the new pot and spread the roots evenly by hand. Add more potting mix around the plant and press it firmly to eliminate air pockets. Water the plant and let the excess water drain out. Place it in a bright and warm spot and avoid direct sunlight for a few days, then move it to an area with a light level that is in range of the apps lighting recommendation.
